You've got your OTP, you have to throw a third into the mix (from the same fandom), creating an OT3. Who is the OTP, and in your opinion, why would they make a perfect third for them?
I love OT3s. The best part of an OT3 is its status as a three legged stool; it can be one of the most stable relationships in the universe.
I already have an OT3, to which I’ve been faithful for lo, these many years. (Good lord, it has been many years. I am an old fandom broad …) My longest-running OT3 has been the Ninth Doctor/Rose Tyler/Jack Harkness, as anyone who has read much of my Who fanfic probably can guess. Not that I wrote a novel-length fic about them falling in love whilst solving a planetary and galactic threat*cough*it took 11 years*cough.
Why? First, from a Doylist perspective, the actors sold me on it; they had chemistry that persuaded me. It didn’t jump out at me, but it was there; and then, when Jack kissed both of them before going off to die a heroic death (don’t worry; he got better), I was sold on the Watsonian level as well.
I felt Jack’s not-very-well-hidden vulnerability and desire for love; I felt the inner steel in Rose, and her need to give love. I felt the Ninth Doctor’s growing love for them, despite any protestation of his to the contrary. The two men thought they were damaged goods, and Rose was the one to smack some sense into them with her own love. Had they gotten off Game Station together, their relationship would have lasted until his beloved humans’ deaths. And even then, love doesn’t die.
(I realize that it sounds as if I’m cubby holing Rose as the “if you love problematic men hard enough you can save them” woman. I’m not. I believe that she needed their love, and they gave it back unstintingly.)
And I think the wonderful thing about the Doctor is that his two hearts allow him to love other entities as well, whether that's his wife with the riotous hair and killer smile, or the wife that stole him away from Gallifreey. When you live as long a life as the Doctor, you have plenty of time for love.
One other OT3 do I have; Steel/Sapphire/Silver, from “Sapphire and Steel”. Here, I’m persuaded by this non-human OT3 almost (but not completely) solely because of David Collings, who played Silver. His flirtatious relationship with the other two is delicious to watch, and I wish they had had more time together.
As for any potential OT3 … hmmm, possibly Maia/Csethiro/Csevet from The Goblin Emperor. I think Maia, as the Emperor Edrihasavar, needs grounding and, once again, unstinting love. He would get that unreservedly from Csevet, and he would get that carefully, logically and eventually fully from his second best protector, Csethiro. I think she is adventurous enough to at least consider embarking on a relationship of that sort, but I’m not sure I’m the person to write it.
Once again, I’ve rambled on far too long. That’s about it.
