Dept. of Happy Birthday America

A Beautiful, Messy, Disastrous Victory of a Country

There are faults and dangers. They're real, and they have to be tackled, and acknowledged, and we have to struggle to fix them, and we might fuck up badly. Lord knows, we've done that before. There are Americans who are still oppressed, marginalized, passed over, and wronged. And none of us will have full freedom until we change that.

I hope to god we do that; I hope we stand up to the greed-headed selfish bastards - either the ones around us or the ones inside us - and transform their hearts,  our hearts, and make this country better.

Because America is something amazing on this earth, one that stumbles and lurches, falls, gets up and struggles forward again,  toward freedom and democracy. This country holds within its Constitution, within its traditions, within its millions of souls, the promise of so much good ...

I promise to do my best. I promise to help this place, this America - my second home, the place that holds so much of my heart - become as magnificent as it can be.

Happy Birthday, America.
