Two Hundred Forty Five Years

We here in the U.S. often tend to think that's a fairly long time for a country to endure.

It isn't.

Dept. of Memes

Frankenstein Meme, Day 6

What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom? What fandom was it? Not necessarily your oldest fandom, but a fandom that you started and still continue to read/write/create content for in some way:

This one's easy to answer. I’ve been in general science fiction fandom since 1977, when I went to my first SFF con, Suncon, the 1977 Worldcon in Miami.

I’d read science fiction and fantasy pretty exclusively since learning to read, which I suppose says something about me, but I’d had no idea there existed other people who loved to get together on paper or in person to share our enjoyment of the genre, to love it and fight over it (OMG the firestorms — online fannish wank has nothing on the Great Wars That Bid Fair to Tear All Fandom Apart *snrk*).

Although I’ve gafiated a fair amount over the last few years, I still consider it my oldest continuing fandom. As with a lot of general SFF fans, my creative energies were put into reading and communicating (ah, RASSF, of blessed Usenet memory).

My longest continuing online fandom is Who fandom; that’s the one in which I continue to create, which reminds me I need to get back to my crossover fic. Ack.)

And this might be my shortest meme answer to date.
