It's Meme Time for MamaK
It's Friday, I'm taking my third un-paid furlough day, and I want to get back into the posting swing of lj things by responding to a couple of memes with which I've been tagged lately.
First up? This:
"Leave me a comment and I will give you a letter.
Then, write 10 things that you love starting with that letter. Post the list in your journal. Give out letters to those who comment in return."
I was tagged by the delightful cygnia  with the letter "N" and here are my answers.
  1. Nova Scotia; where I was raised and the most gorgeous province in Eastern Canada.
  2. Newspapers; I am a newspaper reporter and have been one for 34 years. I think newspapers are an integral column supporting American democracy, and eminently worthy of fighting for, all declarations of imminent newspaper death notwithstanding.
  3. Nilsson, Harry; remarkably gifted songwriter, singer, arranger and more-than-occasional Fifth Beatle. All of his stuff is wonderful, whether it makes your heart fly, or breaks it.
  4. Nutella; which is, literally, death on a bun if you don't watch how much of this luscious hazelnut and chocolate spread you chow down on. (Hazelnut spread, they call it - ha. It's chocolate, with just the tiniest touch of hazelnut, perhaps an echo of hazelnut, if you will ....)
  5. Ninth Doctor; the crop-haired, leather-cloaked Time Lord with the ice blue eyes, big ears, vulnerable mouth and Mancunian accent, full of anger and idealism, is My Doctor, despite my considerable love for every single Doctor since William Hartnell first challenged Barbara and Ian in the junkyard.
  6. Nana; my maternal grandmother Margaret Barss (Stackhouse) Kierstead. She and my mother raised my brother and me, and she was the at-home face of the stable loving family I was blessed with. She sang beautifully, was a born diplomat, a gentle soul with a vibrant sense of humor and wisdom about the human heart - not to mention a work ethic that wouldn't quit and patience that made Job look like an ADD kid with anger management issues. I loved her a great deal, always will, and hope she's watching over me from the heaven in which she sure as hell deserves to be.
  7. Nix, Garth; writer of "Sabriel," "Lirael" and "Abhorsen," three of the most wonderfully creepy fantasies about dealing with the dead that I've ever had the slightly nervous delight to read. You haven't been scared about dead things until you read these stories, and I am amazed - amazed - that these are listed as "young adult."
  8. Nova; the novel by Samuel R. Delaney, not the astronomical event, although those also also rock. It was the first Delaney novel I ever read, and it made me a lasting fan of the man. It made me think about the nature of language, about interpersonal relationships, about how technology moulds job markets and star empires, and did it with bracingly memorable characters, stately but brutally clear language, and imagery strong enough to hit my limbic system. It's been part of my thought process since I read it.
  9. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds; the wonderful movie (and the longer, more amazing, but kind of hard to read if it's too small, manga) by Hayao Miyazaki, The movie's sound track, by Joe Hisaishi, is hauntingly beautiful, too.
  10. Nutria; yeah, not really, but ever since I started thinking about things I like that begin with the letter "n," I've been thinking about these small southern water mammals, on the daily price of whose pelts I used to report. Daily. But that was long ago, and the wench is dead. And my list is now finished - thanks, nutria!
